Vinyl flooring boosts recycling rates in Tyneside

The recycling of vinyl flooring has contributed to a rise in the amount of goods being reused in north Tyneside.

Sita UK, the waste management firm which runs the North Shields household waste and recycling centre, recently added more recycling bays to its facility – allowing local residents to recycle ferrous materials including stainless steel sinks, pipes and vinyl flooring.

The implementation of the new bays helped to increase the amount being recycled in the region – 4,469 tonnes in 2009 in comparison with 4,171 tonnes the year before, reports Recycling & Waste Management News.

Andrew Hughes, Sita regional manager for Tyneside, said: "It is pleasing to see that the recycling figures have increased in North Tyneside.

"We hope the trend continues and we see even greater increases next year."

Last month, it was revealed that six companies in the UK have signed up to a new vinyl flooring recycling initiative.

The Recofloor scheme involves distributors returning uplifted vinyl flooring and unneeded installation off-cuts to special recycle points dotted around the country.
