Wood floors can look 'good as new' with quick cleaning

Giving a wood floor the once-over can make it look brand new, according to tips provided by the Good Housekeeping Research Institute.

A recent Salt Lake Tribune article explored some of the best ways to rid a wood floor of stains, dirt and scuff marks.

The guide highlighted the durability of wood flooring, with scuff marks simply sitting on top of the floor's finish. For the lightest kind of marks, it advised using a sock or tennis ball to get rid of any streaks.

"For more stubborn marks, apply a little baking soda to a damp cloth and gently rub the scuff until it disappears. Rinse by wiping with a clean section of … cloth," it recommended.

The guide's advice comes after recommendations from columnist Lea Miller. In a recent Helium article she promoted the durability of wood floors and claimed they could last for decades with the right maintenance.

The Salt Lake Tribune guide went on to recommend regular vacuuming of wood floors, claiming that it is "more thorough" than conventional cleaning methods such as brushing.
