Wood flooring 'is timeless'

Wood flooring has been hailed as a fixture that never goes out of fashion.

Responding to the query of a San Francisco Chronicle reader, DIY agony aunts Bill and Kevin Burnett explained how they had turned to the material.

Kevin noted that one of the first steps Bill took after his mortgage was paid off was to completely revamp his surfaces with wood floors.

"We think wood flooring is timeless and we like it even more when it's combined with modern short-pile or Berber carpet," he said.

The Burnetts urged the homeowner to pick a room and adorn it with wood flooring but acknowledged the wide range of choices they face in selecting a species.

They also advised the reader to be aware of the potential savings that could be made if they tackled the installation themselves.

Craftsmen from Meyer Wells recently told the Seattle Times of the large amount of work that goes into creating wood floors from solid timber.
