Wood flooring industry revolutionised by new soy adhesive

The wood flooring industry could be set for changes following the development of a new soy-based wood adhesive.

Natural News reports that homeowners fitting wood floors will no longer have to suffer from formaldehyde fumes thanks to a new discovery by researchers from the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) Forest Products Laboratory.

The scientists reported their findings to the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Researcher on the project Charles Frihart said there are a range of reasons for wood flooring manufacturers to abandon toxic adhesives and cited health issues such as headaches, burning sensations and cancer.

"Several technologies and environmental factors have led to a resurgence of protein, especially soy flour, as an important adhesive for interior plywood and wood flooring," he said.

Earlier in the month, research by Global Industry Analysts revealed that the worldwide laminate flooring market is predicted to see increased demand.
