Wood flooring 'healthier option than carpet'

Wood flooring has been promoted to new parents considering using carpet in their nurseries.

In a recent Sun-Sentinel guide, columnist Cara Smusiak noted that some types of flooring can give off harmful chemicals, which could be detrimental to a child's health.

She advised the use of paints with low levels of volatile organic compounds and noted that carpet is often a popular choice among homeowners.

However, Ms Smusiak noted that this material is "not always the healthiest option" and explained that petrochemicals are often present in synthetic materials.

"Carpets also harbour pathogens such as bacteria, so a wood floor may be a healthier option all around," she said.

Ms Smusiak went on to recommend using formaldehyde-free furniture in the nursery, noting that although it tends to have a higher price than regular materials, the extra cost "may be well worth it".

This goes against comments from TV presenter George Clarke, who recently told the Shropshire Star that carpet is "hygienic".
