Wood flooring 'does not contain dangerous substances'

Wood flooring is a material that is free from the contamination of dangerous substances.

This is according to a guide to greening a home by Poughkeepsie Journal columnist Abby Luby, which stated that many carpets contain the remnants of chemical treatments.

"Carpeting uses many materials from petroleum-based sources that emit VOCs (volatile organic compounds)," she said. "Carpet also harbours all sorts of dirt, dust, pollen and other allergens that are hard to remove and contribute to poor air quality."

Ms Luby went on to assert that wood flooring is free from such issues and consulted interior designer Gina Porcelli, who recommended checking if wood flooring products are certified by US body the Forest Stewardship Council.

Her comments go against the views expressed by a recent Deccan Chronicle guide, which claimed carpets and rugs are being increasingly sought by homeowners trying to remain on-trend.

It also claimed that dark wooden floors are a particularly popular fixture for this season.
