Wood flooring 'can be imprinted by rubber-backed rugs'

Wood flooring can potentially be damaged by adorning it with rubber-backed rugs, it has been claimed.

In a recent Kansas City Star Q&A session with columnist Al Heavens, one reader reported on this issue, noting that Mr Heavens had previously warned against their use on vinyl floors.

However, they explained that these rubber pads, which prevent the rug from slipping, had left imprints on their wood flooring, prompting them to abandon the fixtures.

"We discovered this when we lifted up an area rug and pad in preparation for refinishing the floor. The entire floor underneath showed the waffle pattern on the pad," said the reader.

They also ruled out damage caused by sunlight and heat as the room in question was exposed to neither.

Earlier in the month, the Associated Press quoted the Good Housekeeping Research Institute as stating that scuff marks on wood floors are quite easy to remove.
