Wood flooring 'can be a green option'

Wood flooring is one area in which property owners can make environmentally-friendly improvements to their home, it has been suggested.

Writing for AnnArbor.com, Bruce Curtis, the owner of interior design firm Washtenaw Woodwrights, said that householders had plenty of options for making their property greener.

They ranged from new lighting to cabinets made from recycled wood, it was suggested.

"Flooring is another area with good green choices," Mr Curtis added, going on to say that old wood flooring could be refinished for those who did not have the budget to install a new surface.

But he also stated that homeowners searching for a new look that would not be harmful to the environment should consider "the value of locally-produced wood flooring".

Earlier this week, Othmar Jacobs of Creative Design told the Evansville Courier & Press that installing wood flooring could help cut energy bills during the spring and summer months.

He said this was because the surface does not trap heat – meaning that there is less need for air conditioning to be used.
