Wood flooring breakage highlights need to acclimatise

The breakage of wood flooring in one high school gym has highlighted the need to acclimatise the material.

A recent report from the Arizona Daily Star examined the problems experienced by Tucson High School's main athletics area and consulted Marcus Jones, the program manager for architecture in the district.

He revealed that the repairs will be expensive but will be borne by the previous contractor due to the fact they neglected to acclimate the wood floors.

"Normally, the wood has to be brought into the building before it is installed so it can acclimatise to the room," Mr Jones said. "Somewhere in that process, something went wrong."

He went on to note that the same material has been put in the educational facility's new "annex" gym and no splitting has occurred there.

In a recent SiLive.com article, building expert Tim Carter warned homeowners to acclimate their wood flooring materials before installation.
