'Use the right cleaners' on wood flooring
Homeowners have been advised to use the right cleaners when sprucing up their wood flooring.
Writing for Newsday, Gigi Aharoni spoke to Gary Ridente of US retailer GR Wood Flooring.
He warned homeowners of the dangers of cleaning wood floors with unsuitable products.
"Whatever you do, don't use any products that contain oil, wax or ammonia - and never use water," said Mr Ridente.
He claimed that the use of such products can dull the finish of wood floors, in addition to affecting homeowners' ability to recoat them down the line.
Similarly, water will exacerbate the natural expansion of wood, causing floors to swell up and, in some cases crack, Mr Ridente said.
An About.com guide expressed similar sentiments, noting that wood flooring's worst enemy is water.
It advised rapidly cleaning any wet spills with a soft towel and claimed that regular vacuuming of carpets and rugs can prevent dirt from filtering down and scratching the wood floors beneath.
