Soy flour 'important adhesive' for wood flooring
Wood flooring, furniture and a variety of other wood products could benefit from an unusual ingredient usually found in food.
Greenbiz.com reports that a new wood adhesive made from soy flour was introduced by US Department of Agriculture researcher Charles Frihart at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society.
He explained that petrochemical-based adhesives had replaced protein-based ones during the early 20th century, mainly due to factors such as cost and production efficiency. However, he went on to note that changes are occurring in the field.
"Several technologies and environmental factors have led to a resurgence of protein, especially soy flour, as an important adhesive for interior plywood and wood flooring," Mr Frihart said.
He went on to reveal the intentions of his research team to conduct further research into the development of soy adhesives with enhanced strength.
Earlier in the month, an article in the Province promoted wood flooring as a versatile material, usable in a wide variety of rooms.
