Solid wood floors 'last for decades'
With the right kind of care and maintenance a solid wood floor can last for many years, according to one DIY enthusiast.
In a recent Helium article, columnist Lea Miller promoted the durability and beauty of solid wood flooring, but was quick to advise homeowners to plan ahead when deciding on their preferred type of flooring.
She also noted the beneficial properties of engineered wood flooring, which contains a "thin veneer" of hardwood, usually set over plywood or another artificial material.
"Engineered wood may be more stable than solid wood when the materials are assembled with the plywood grain," she said. "Engineered wood also may be more tolerant of fluctuating climate conditions."
These sentiments were echoed in a recent Province article, in which columnist Marc Atiyolil praised the adaptability of wood flooring.
Ms Miller went on to note that wood floors are also superior to carpets in terms of health. While surface dirt on wood floors can easily be cleaned using various simple methods, carpets which are regularly cleaned will still retain dirt in their fibres.
