Solid wood flooring used in newly-renovated shelter
A shelter for homeless women has spent nearly $80,000 (£50,000) on renovations such as solid wood floors.
Writing for the Olympian, columnist Matt Batcheldor reported on the Bread and Roses shelter, which is due to hold an open house this weekend to display what it has done with the donations and funding it received.
After a fire caused extensive damage to the staff living quarters, volunteer Phil Owen and wife Meta Hogan set about overseeing repairs to the shelter.
"Carpet was torn out, walls repainted. Bag after bag of trash was removed from the women's shelter. Original hardwood floors were refinished, and industrial-grade carpet and vinyl flooring were laid," said Mr Batcheldor.
The shelter received funds from the city of Olympia to help with the work, which it combined with the money in its reserves to pay for the extensive overhaul.
A recent Calgary Herald article reported on a new housing development in the city, which made extensive use of solid wood floors in its homes.
