Reclaimed wood flooring 'adds distinctiveness to a home'

Wood flooring which has been previously used has received praise for being a material with a number of benefits.

Democrat and Chronicle columnist Joy Underhill claimed that - as well as being environmentally friendly, it can also provide a number of aesthetic benefits.

"Reclaimed wood can help get you there, whether for a new build or new flooring. Its one-of-a-kind qualities can add distinctiveness to your home," she said.

Ms Underhill explored the sources of reclaimed wood floors, noting that much of the material is taken from old industrial buildings and unused barns.

She consulted Jennifer Young of New Energy Works, who hit back at claims that recycled wood flooring is only useful for "rustic applications" - stating that it can "juxtapose" well with contemporary interior design.

Earlier in the month, Dirk Stallmann of Steinhafels Furniture told the Journal Sentinel that the reclaimed look is becoming a big trend in his sector, noting that some homeowners are opting for new furnishings stained to look older.
