Museum applauded for wood flooring
A Canadian museum has been handed the green building design accolade at the Wood Works Awards for a new area that features wood flooring.
The Daily Commercial News reported that the Waterloo Region Museum in Ontario used recycled birch for the floor, with 98 per cent of the wood utilised in the development coming from responsibly-managed forests.
Speaking to the publication, executive director of Wood Works Ontario Marianne Berube claimed wood is being employed increasingly by architects.
In her view, there are cultural and social benefits from using such materials in new designs.
Ms Berube was quoted as saying: "Certainly the structural advantages of building with wood are clear and most people now know that wood is a renewable and sustainable building material."
Homeowners keen to install a solid wood floor in their home may be pleased to hear the design option was recently described as durable and versatile by Matt Le Vesque of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
