Leave wood floors 'to the experts'
Homeowners considering installing hardwood floors in their property have been told that such work is best left to professional tradesmen and women.
Responding to a reader's question in the Washington Post, Tim Carter said that while he is usually encouraging those eager to attempt home DIY, when it comes to wood floors, professionals really do know best.
He said that professional flooring installers will have all manner of special tools and techniques to ensure the smooth laying of a surface, many of which "rookie" DIYers would not even consider to be important.
He also noted that those who feel confident of installing their own wood floors after watching TV DIY and makeover shows should remember that "they gloss over the finer points of installing the material" on such programmes.
Important aspects of installing wooden flooring include letting the wood acclimatise to the temperature of a home, he said, which can take days.
The Richmond Review recently reported that eco-conscious homeowners looking to install wood flooring will find a number of ideal options, including reclaimed flooring coverings.
