Initial layout of wood floors 'is critical'

Taking the time to layout wood floors before installing them is an important way of making sure a job runs smoothly and the finished result is perfect.

Columnist and DIY expert Tim Carter, writing for the Washington Post, said that the initial layout of wooden flooring is "very critical".

Doing this is especially important if the hardwood flooring is to be laid in a number of rooms in the home, he said.

When laying out wood floors, homeowners should ensure they avoid "cutting narrow strips next to any of the walls where the strips run parallel to the walls", he advised, as well as a need to make sure they leave a gap as wide as the baseboard.

Wood flooring options made with the health of the planet in mind are becoming increasing popular with homeowners keen to make their property more sustainable, the Ottawa Citizen recently reported.

Green flooring choices could include reclaimed wood from other homes.
