Hardwood floors 'should last a lifetime'
Wood flooring which receives the right kind of maintenance can last for years, one flooring expert has claimed.
Calvin Onyszchuk of Alberta Hardwood Flooring told the Calgary Herald that, with regular refinishing and maintenance, quality solid wood floors "should last a lifetime".
"If properly maintained, a site-finished floor can definitely go upwards of ten years before a complete sand and pre-finished floors can go longer, depending on the wear that is occurring," he said.
His advice was echoed by interior designer Wil Tunnell who, in a recent Guardian article, said that hard-wearing wood floors should be used by homeowners with teenage children.
Rod Martin of Smith Bros Floors advised homeowners to refinish the whole of their wood floors, even if the wear was confined to a certain area. This would help prevent the surface from looking uneven, he said.
He also advised renovators not to worry unduly about making sure the new stain is exactly the same colour as the previous one, as a couple of percentage points variance would not make "a huge difference" to the look of a floor.
