Hardwood flooring 'is a low maintenance choice'
Hardwood flooring is a practical option for people with allergies, according to a couple who have recently completed a major home refurbishment project.
Wayne and Susan King purchased a dilapidated Victorian home in Dayton in 2005 and have spent the intervening years returning it to its former glory, reports the Kentucky Enquirer.
In order to create a modern home which makes the most of the 110-year-old property's architectural features, the couple stripped out much of what they found and updated it.
However, one thing to survive was the hardwood flooring, which they viewed as being both attractive and practical.
Some of it was in a poor state, so they replaced it with new Brazilian cherry hardwood flooring, but the rest of the original wood floors only needed refinishing.
Mrs King said she was delighted with the outcome - and not just because of the way it looked.
"We wanted easy maintenance, and I have allergies. The hardwood floors and window blinds are so easy to keep clean," she explained.
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends replacing carpets with hardwood flooring, as carpets provide a perfect habitat for dust mites.
