Expert offers hardwood floor tips

Homeowners have been advised to get the best out of their hardwood floors by keeping one eye on maintenance.

In an article published by Indiana news source Valpolife.com, local firm Tudor Floors Carpet One said people should expect "years of beauty from your wood floor" if they follow a few basic steps.

Firstly, property owners were told never to mop solid wood floors with water, as this can damage the surface and dull the finish.

To keep the floor clean, the retailer advised people to use a vacuum cleaner and broom on a regular basis.

"The vacuum head must be a felt or brush type. Be certain that the wheels of the vacuum are clean and do not damage the finish," it explained.

In addition, householders were urged to not leave their wood flooring exposed to the sun for long periods, as this can speed up the oxidation and aging of the surface.

DIY guru Jeff Howell of the Daily Telegraph recently advised homeowners with older properties to switch from concrete to wood flooring as a way to combat damp problems.
