Laminate flooring preparation reveals cracks

A homeowner seeking to fit laminate flooring discovered a range of problems with his home as he prepared to install the material.

Writing for the South Carolina State, columnist Kristy Rupon told the story of local resident Rahkeem Golden.

Mr Golden was in the process of taking up the carpet in his new home so he could put in laminate flooring when he discovered cracks in the house's foundation.

Unfortunately, due to a legal loophole he was unable to force the building company, Firstar Homes, to fix the property's various problems.

The company had surrendered its licence in an effort to get out of paying a fine and receiving probation over a consumer complaint. However, it continued to trade as a general contractor, which is allowed under state law.

This loophole was criticised by Ms Rupon and drew scorn from senator Joel Lourie, who said it left homeowners vulnerable.

Last month in Your Mortgage, an Australian couple warned homeowners to get builders to sign a detailed contract following their home improvement difficulties.
