Laminate flooring is 'easy step' to prepare home for elderly care

Homeowners providing care for the elderly have been advised to prepare their home using laminate flooring.

Writing for Fredericksburg.com, specialist extension agent Kim Elkins offered home improvement tips for people caring for the elderly.

She claimed that it was vital to prepare the home for an older resident and suggested a range of easy ways to make a house safer for aged adults.

"Consider a colour change when the flooring surface or level changes. For example, avoid having beige carpet run into beige laminate flooring," Ms Elkins said.

She also promoted the use of such smooth-surface flooring for bedrooms where elderly residents sleep.

According to Housingcare.org, homeowners can make their houses safer for older residents by altering fixtures such as heating, security works and other adaptations.

It recommends seeking help from support groups such as Age Concern or the Home Improvement Agency, which can advise homeowners on what changes can be made in their house.
