Laminate flooring 'gaining ground'

Laminate flooring has been promoted as a material that is rapidly growing in popularity.

Writing for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, columnist Nancy Herrick hailed home renovation as a way to bring a property up-to-date and in-line with the latest style trends.

She paid particular attention to the "interior finishes", a home's permanent fixtures, which provide the backdrop for its decor and includes flooring and countertops.

Ms Herrick consulted Joe Laszkiewicz, manager of Nonn's Design, who noted that wood flooring is a "strong choice" but also observed that laminate floors are "gaining ground" on traditional options.

"It's getting better looking and requires little maintenance," he said. "We're using it for kitchens, hallways, utility rooms and even living areas."

Laminate flooring's ease of maintenance and value was recently promoted in an eHow guide to interior design.

It noted that new materials offer the look of hardwood but without the cost and regular maintenance associated with real timber.
