Expert highlights carpet risks
Laminate or vinyl flooring could be in demand after an expert warned that carpet could bring with it certain risks.
According to Leo Nov of RestorationSOS.com, carpet is particularly problematic if it is exposed to moisture, such as flood water.
He warned that wet carpet can ruin the wood flooring beneath, as the combination of dampness and heat could cause it to decompose.
Mr Nov also noted that wet carpets can create bad smells that are difficult to get rid of without recarpeting the house.
"A wet and dirty carpet is unsightly, but it is also dangerous to your health," he commented.
Mr Nov added that moisture could loosen the glue that attaches the carpet to the floor.
The warning could prompt more people to invest in alternatives such as laminate and vinyl flooring instead.
Homeowners were recently warned by Kim Elkins of Virginia Cooperative Extension that carpet can be a magnet for allergens such as pet hair and dust.
She therefore told Fredericksburg.com that homeowners could reduce the chances of suffering a sneezing fit by opting for different flooring.
