Companies 'interested in using OSB in laminate flooring'

Two large wood flooring companies have expressed an interest in using oriented strand board (OSB) in their laminate flooring products.

This is according to BusinessNorth.com, which recently reported on the efforts of scientists at the Natural Resources Research Institute, who have been attempting to bond OSB wood fibres with a magnesium-based binding agent.

If they are able to succeed in their endeavours, the researchers could provide an alternative to conventional petroleum-based binders.

The publication spoke to Matt Aro, a research fellow at the organisation, who claimed that there are a number of benefits to using inorganic substances.

He explained that magnesium OSB's main advantage is environmental, as it takes much less energy to create than petroleum products.

It was also revealed that two wood flooring companies have questioned researchers on applying the technology to their laminate flooring products.

This comes after Unified Hardwood Promotion announced the launch of a campaign to promote wood flooring in the US.
