AC rating 'important in laminate flooring choice'

People planning to install laminate flooring have been advised to consider the AC rating of products before making a final decision on which to buy.

Laminate flooring has become popular with homeowners in recent times because it is cheaper than many of the alternatives, easy to fit, looks good and is hardwearing.

However, there can be big differences in how durable different laminate flooring products are.

The Association of European Producers of Laminate Flooring has devised the AC rating system to help both domestic and commercial buyers assess which product best suits their need.

Steve Maxwell of Canadian Home Workshop suggested that people buying laminate flooring should use the ratings in their decision-making process.

Writing for the Toronto Star, he explained that products with an AC rating of five are the most durable and are generally only used in commercial premises.

Products with the lowest ratings are designed for use in rooms in domestic properties which do not get much wear and tear, such as a spare bedroom.

In answer to a reader's question about what type of laminate flooring should be fitted in a house with dogs, teenagers and winter boots, Mr Maxwell recommended an AC4 product.ADNFCR-2810-ID-19544335-ADNFCR
