It has been suggested that the ongoing recession could be responsible for low sales of wood flooring - rather than low-price Chinese imports.
International Decorative Services has told the Contract Flooring Journal that although the impact was expected, it has had a significantly large effect on the wood flooring market.
People have been quick to attribute the slump to cheaper Chinese imports – a hugely contentious issue in the United States; and one that has led to legal action being taken.
Speaking to the Contract Flooring Journal, flooring director for International Decorative Services, Neil Smith, said he did not believe Chinese imports were solely to blame.
He said: “Fact is that demand has dried up across the board from consumers to housebuilders, as well as the refurbishment market, so it doesn't matter where the products come from.”
Since reaching a high in 2007, the market for solid wood flooring, in particular, has felt the impact of austerity that the global recession has brought on.
