Why do flooring joists become cracked?

Flooring joists play a vitally important role in buildings up and down the country. In most cases, the joists will provide support under a huge amount of weight; this weight will come, typically, from the subflooring layer, the main floor layer, followed by the appliances and furnishings used to complete a room.

Due to this immense stress, many joists may crack, whilst others may become weakened during the installation process - causing splits and cracks to develop over a period of time.

Traditionally floors joists become cracked for a number of reasons, including:

  • Splits and cracks may often occur at the end of the joist where the bolts that attach them to the property structure are positioned.
  • A slightly bowed joist may provide support to more weight than the non-bowed section of the joist.
  • Higher installation may cause a joist to support more weight than other joists, putting it under greater stress.
