White washing a wood floor

Changing the decor in the home can be difficult if you have wooden flooring with an especially strong finish. White washing your wood flooring is a great way to achieve that new look in your home.

It's extremely simple and with that in mind we've produced a short, simple guide displaying how you can do so:

Step 1 - Firstly you'll need to remove any finish from your wood flooring. To do this, it should be ensured that your flooring is completely clear of both dirt and debris. Sanding pads should then be used to sand away the finish; remember a mask and goggles should be worn at all times when carrying out any sanding.

Step 2 - Once sanded, clean way the dust with a vacuum cleaner. Take a damp mop and clean away any remaining dust - subsequently allowing the floor to dry.

Step 3 - Use a paint roller to apply the white wash - apply to a small section at a time. Leave each white washed patch to work for around three minutes, before wiping away with a piece of old cloth. This process should then be repeated until you've finished the whole floor - which should then be left to dry with an increased level of ventilation.

Step 4 - This step is all about adding the finishing touches to your floor. Add a coat of varnish with the paint roller and leave to dry for 24 hours. Wax can then be applied if desired - to give the floor an even greater shine.
