Two types of material that have never been considered conventional as floor coverings, rubber and cork have become popular choices in recent times.
Sharing a number of similarities, both are soft underfoot and extremely durable.
However, the way in which cork and rubber is produced is very different - cork is a naturally derived material, whilst rubber is manufactured entirely synthetically.
In an age in which preserving the environment has become a big issue, many will wonder which type of floor covering is the most eco-friendly.
Cork as a naturally grown material - derived from cork trees - goes through a less rigorous production process, featuring a much smaller application of chemicals.
On the other hand, the synthetic production process of rubber can release a number of harmful chemicals and toxins into the environment. The odor given off by the rubber after production can also be toxic - making it potentially harmful.
A waxy substance found in cork, known as suberin, makes the material anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. These properties make cork flooring a better choice than rubber for the eco-friendly home.
