Waterproofing Laminate Flooring: It's a no-go

Laminate flooring and water just don't mix well – causing disastrous results. Many homeowners as a result are taking steps to waterproof their laminate flooring – to enable it to be suitable for areas such as bathrooms.

Experts will advise people to avoid trying this; for a good reason too.

With this in mind, here are a number of the reasons why attempting to waterproof laminate flooring should be considered a no-go:

Waterproofing will cause the flooring to crack – This is one of the main reasons cited by experts; the materials used for waterproofing will actually cause the laminate flooring to crack – completely ruining the flooring's appearance. Manufactured with a smooth finish, waterproofing treatments are extremely unlikely to be able to adhere to the surface. Without the adherence, the floor can become blistered – ultimately resulting in the need to replace large parts of the flooring.

The floor won't look the same – Waterproofing will cause the laminate floor to look very different compared to the way it originally appeared. The agents used in waterproofing materials will cause uneven strokes and clumping, which in the long run will only cause the floor to become damaged.

While waterproofing may seem like a practical decision, ultimately it will prove to be a costly expense – therefore making it a definite no-go.
