The winter season is looming and many homeowners may want to give their home a slightly different look. With vinyl flooring – unlike other floor coverings – it is possible to do this without having to replace it, simply by painting.
With this in mind, we've produced a simple guide on how you can revitalize your vinyl floor with a lick of paint:
Step 1 – Before you even contemplate painting your floor, it is crucial to ensure that it is thoroughly cleaned. Using a mop set about cleaning the floor – ensure before you start that any furnishings are removed from the area – whilst covering any items that are unmovable with old sheets, to protect against paint drips.
Step 2 – This next step involves removing the sheen from your floor. For this you will need trisodium phosphate; create a solution by mixing with water and apply to the floor. The solution should then be left to dry.
Step 3 – Using a primer – one that contains a sealer already mixed in – and apply with a roller to your vinyl floor. Ensure that the whole floor is covered and then allow time to dry.
Step 4 – Now the floor can be painted. Before painting, ensure that the paint is stirred – as instructed by the manufacturer. Then set about applying the pain by using either a roller of broad paintbrush – the strokes should be even to achieve the best possible finish. Once completed, leave to dry.
Step 5 – Using the same method as in the previous step, apply a second coat of paint to the flooring – again giving it plenty of time to dry.
Step 6 – Any impurities that are visible should be painted again. Once dry, add a third and final coat of paint and allow to dry completely.
Step 7 – To finish the flooring, take a polyurethane sealer and apply two or three coatings to the vinyl flooring. As with the paint each coat should be given the time to dry in between. Ignoring this final step will cause your flooring to become damaged over time.
