The best woods out there for a subfloor

Although it isn't imperative for a subfloor within the home to be produced from hardwood, it does have its benefits. Providing a solid structure for the top layer of flooring, a hardwood subfloor is a great surface.

So, with this in mind, we've created a short simple guide to the best woods you could use for a hardwood subfloor:

Pine -

Pine is a fantastic wood and the correct grade of this particular wood can make the perfect subflooring layer. With a tight grain, pine subfloor boards should measure around 1 inch by 6 inches.

Douglas Fir -

Probably the most ideal material for a subfloor, boards manufactured from douglas fir should be nailed at a 90 degree angle to the flooring joists - doing this will ensure that all is held down much more securely.

Plywood -

Due to its inexpensive cost, plywood is extremely popular as a subfloor material and very easy to install. It is recommended that a plywood subfloor should be about three-quarters of an inch thick - giving the board the strength it requires to support both the top flooring layer, as well as the weight that it will undoubtedly be put under.
