Show that subfloor some TLC - Stains and Odors

In a previous article we highlighted the often-overlooked care and maintenance that a plywood subflooring layer will require - in order to prevent small problems from developing  into large-scale nightmares.

Staining and the presences of odors are just a couple of the problems that can develop within plywood subflooring.

With this in mind, here is a short guide on how you can eliminate both from your subfloor layer:

Stains and Odors -

Although lovable, pets can often cause a great amount of damage to both flooring and subflooring layers. Should you notice the presence of a strong scent of ammonia once you've cleaned your flooring, there is probably a good chance that your subfloor has become soaked with urine at some point.

If this is the case, pull back your carpet of vinyl flooring - if it's free-floating - and scrub the area with a household-cleansing product. For large areas of soiled material, a sander may be needed.

Once you're satisfied that the area has been adequately cleansed, apply a couple of coats of a primer and sealer to finish the subfloor - this should be left to dry for three or four days before you put your floor covering back into its original position.
