Sand and salt are biggest threats to your hardwood floor

Wood flooring can significantly improve the look of any room, but keeping it damage free is key if you are to ensure it continue to look good and remains long-lasting.

According to blogger Yvonne Moss, the biggest threats to the look of your hardwood flooring are sand and rock salt. Her blog offers advice and tips on many subjects, but she recently wrote that regular sweeping can stop such substances causing noticeable damage.

She said that those with young children, babies who crawl and pets that live indoors should regularly sweep and mop their hardwood floor, paying particular attention to it in the winter time as salt is more prominent on roads and pavements due to ice and snow. Salt can be brought in on your shoes and trodden into the flooring, causing marks, scratches and damage, which negatively affect the appearance of the floor.

"Sand and rock salt are the enemy of a lovely hardwood floor, so if you care about the long-term survival of your floor, you will want to make sure that the salt and sand are not ground in," Ms Moss added.

Experts recommend sweeping your hardwood floor up to three times a week for the best results.
