Removing vinyl flooring from a concrete subfloor

Over time vinyl flooring can become worn - either through unexpected accidents or general wear and tear - and therefore it may need to be replaced. In order to go about installing that new floor covering - be it vinyl, laminate, wood or cork - it is important to remove the old layer first.

Typically when installed on a concrete subfloor, vinyl flooring will have been stuck down using a floor adhesive. Whist this may seem like something that will complicate the removal process, it really won't.

To remove the vinyl flooring from the concrete subfloor you simply need to soften the adhesive - to make it easier to pull away from the subfloor.

In order to do this, use a tool that will generate a significant amount of heat; tools such as a hot air gun or a power steamer are highly recommended - working effectively to melt, but not burn the glue.

Once the glue has been melted, you will find that the vinyl can simply be pulled away in an easy action. The remaining adhesive should also be soft enough to scrape away from the subfloor too.

Having done this you will be left with completely clear subfloor - ready to install your brand new floor covering.
