Removing scratches from solid wood flooring

Solid wood flooring really is something of great beauty; however, it is much less so when it's been scratched and damaged over a period of time.

Here is a simple five-step guide to remove scratches from a solid wood floor:

  • Locate the area of scratched wood and clean with a commercial wood cleaner – removing any debris or grime from the surface.
  • Take a steel wood pad and rub hard into the scratched area – but only hard enough to buff the scratch out, and go with the grain of the floor.
  • Lightly move outwards with the steel wool pad towards surrounding areas – as this will ensure the sanding looks as natural as it can be.
  • If the scratch is still visible, take a wax wood repair stick to the area; blonde and brown are the most ideally recommended colours to cover any scratches, though a clear variety is also available.
  • Leave for ten minutes to set before wiping the area clean with a fresh cloth.
