Reclaimed wood flooring – more than just a floor

Reclaimed wood flooring is an option that can be overlooked by many, when making a choice on flooring surfaces.

Writing for the Edmonton Journal, Leanne Brownoff, however, has praised reclaimed wood as being "more than flooring."

She writes: "It is an art form that pays homage to our heritage. Reclaiming wood refers to salvaging the wooden remains of deconstruction sites such as historical homes, old buildings, mills, warehouses or barns."

If the wood is to be restored to former glories, she warns that time, effort and money are needed – which may lead some to go for the readily finished alternative of solid wood flooring.

Each plank needs to be hand-graded, sized up for custom lengths and sanded back – in order to bring out the inner beauty of each plank.

Brownoff states, although ultimately a labour of love, reclaimed wood flooring will reflect, "a place in time and honours the craftsmanship involved in the original construction."
