Protecting your solid wood floor against rot

Solid wood flooring in the home can look stunning, however to keep it in such a condition, regular care and attention needs to be taken to prevent rot from setting in.

There are two types of rot that can affect solid wood flooring, wet rot and dry rot.

Unsurprisingly, wet rot can only occur where the wood is damp.

Although fairly serious it can be cut out and replaced with new wood, though the cause of the damp conditions must first be identified and then resolved.

All the affected areas can be cut back until a solid wood finish is reached – though in some cases the rot may be too great in which whole floorboards will need to be replaced.

Dry rot, however, is not so easy to solve.

A fast-spreading fungus – one that can be identified by its cotton wool-like appearance – it can cause serious damage.

If you find evidence of dry rot, the best course of action is to consult the advice of an expert – as dry rot can get into the brickwork, which can lead to serious structural damage.
