Preparing for the installation of a cork floor

A sustainable, eco-friendly material, cork flooring has become a great choice for those looking to create a different appearance in the home – in the form of incredible aesthetic beauty and a stunning uniqueness.

Unlike wood flooring, which is so popular, many will be unaware of how to go about installing a cork floor in the correct manner, or indeed the preparation steps that are required beforehand.

With this in mind, here are three basic preparatory steps that can be taken before the installing of cork flooring:

  • As with the installation of all flooring surfaces, the sub-floor must be correctly prepared; ensuring the surface is clear of any wax, debris, paint or grit will be sufficient enough. If lying over wooden floorboards, remove the layer of paint or varnish using a removal product. The floor should then be given time to dry sufficiently.
  • Place the cork flooring in the room you plan to install it in – this may sound odd, but it will allow the cork to become accustomed to the room climate. The cork should be left to acclimatize for a minimum of 48 hours. Humidity levels should be kept at a low to moderate temperature.
  • Un-level concrete subflooring will need to be leveled. Cracks should be filled in and subsequently sanded for a clean appearance. Latex filler and concrete primer should be used to create a level surface suitable for laying the cork on.
