Painting a distressed wood floor

Wood flooring that has become distressed over time can be revitalised with a lick of paint; though the end results can vary depending on the type of wood used and the floor's age.

However, painting the floor can also be a great was of preserving the floor's appearance; so here is a simple guide that you can follow to successfully paint your distressed wood floor:

Step 1 - When choosing a paint you should ideally go for one that is oil-based - a much more durable choice, oil-based paints stand up to general wear and tear much better than latex-based products.

Step 2 - Before painting you should ensure that your floor is clean. Take a vacuum cleaner and clear away any dust, dirt or debris away. Any cracks in the floor should be filled in with caulk.

Now the floor is clear you can begin painting. Start by painting the edges with a trim brush - ensuring that you take care as you paint around any pieces of furniture or other fixtures in the room.

Step 3 - Apply the paint with a roller  - ensuring each stroke is consistent with the wood's grain. Once complete, allow to dry for a minimum of three days.

Step 4 - Using a gentle technique, sand the floor - this will smooth out any uneven brushstrokes. Sanding will also eventually bring the wood grain back - allowing it to show through the paint, giving the floor an entirely unique look.

Step 5 - Clean up any dust from sanding and apply another coat of paint - allowing it plenty of time to dry.
