According to a report out today more homeowners are asking flooring manufacturers and sales staff for environmentally friendly solid wood floors and underlay more than ever before.
Choosing wood flooring that has been made from materials such as cork and bamboo are becoming more popular because they regenerate more quickly rather than trees, which need to be cut down and harvested.
"We have customers who only request environmentally friendly products. They won't buy it unless it's green," says the owner of one flooring manufacturer. "It's (demand) been consumer-driven because of the fact they want to give back to the environment."
The advice given to homeowners however is to only choose bamboo or cork if there is little or no chance of moisture because of the risk of expansion, but are also told that both materials are very durable.
Advice from one flooring manufacturer is this: “Really do (your) homework, don't listen to (just) one person. It's worth it to ask the salesperson for some sample boards or to buy a box if you think you have your mind-set on it.
"Think about what you want and how you want to use it. Do some testing with it. Scratch it. Smell it. Walk on it. Put it outside near the pool. Put it in the pool. Just see what it's able to (handle) before you put it in to your house."
