More errors to avoid when installing wood flooring

There are a number of mistakes commonly made by DIY'ers when fitting wood flooring.

As well as having a detrimental effect on the overall finish of the flooring, these errors are very much avoidable.

Here are a number of other mistakes you should avoid making when laying your wooden flooring:

Cutting a floor to fit round an architrave – Architrave is the wooden moulding fitted around a door or window. Rather than cutting a floor to fit round it, you should cut a gap in the architrave, large enough to simply slide the wood flooring underneath – as this will provide a much cleaner finish.

Spaces between flooring boards – This usually happens as a result of not using enough glue or because the tongue and groove boards were not kept close enough together when the glue was left to set.

Floors pushed right up against the skirting board – The skirting should be removed and then refitted once the wood flooring has been installed. All though this will take extra time, it will ultimately provide a better appearance.

Hollow footfalls – These are caused when there is a small gap underneath a board. This usually occurs because the subfloor layer underneath isn't level or there isn't enough underlay – the simple solution for this is to ensure that all layers underneath the flooring are level, or in the case of underlaying, adequate.
