Measuring a room before buying wood flooring

Many people, when planning to install a new wood floor in the home, choose to focus all of their attention on the aesthetic features, rather than how much floor they'll actually need to cover the room.

While somewhat understandable, it is important that the dimensions of a room are measured correctly before the wood flooring is purchased.

Measuring these dimensions really isn't difficult; here's how you can do so in your home:

Step 1 - If the room is an irregular shape, simply divide it up into squares and rectangles.

Step 2 - Then use those shapes to work out a size by multiplying the length and width of each of the divided shapes.

Step 3 - Add the totals of each square or rectangle to get the square footage for your entire floor space.

Step 4 - Now you have the total square footage for the room you should add an extra 10 per cent on to your final total - this will account for spare and cutting waste.
