Make the right choice of floor for your dining room

Changing the colours of your walls and curtains, or overhauling your flooring, can be a great way to refresh and update rooms in your home.

But considering how your redecorated room is going to be used should have a huge effect on your choice of materials.

For doing up a dining room, it's important to think about how often the room is used, whether it's for family meals or dinner parties, and whether the dining furniture will remain in place after use, or if you want to pack it away.

Certain floor types are more durable and hardwearing than others - and in a dining room, where chairs are likely to be moved around a lot, choosing a floor that won't scratch or get indented can be as important as finding the right finish or colour.

Hardwood flooring is really durable, but can be scratched by furniture. Whilst scratches may be easy to repair, preventing them happening in the first place may be the best policy. You could use felt or rubber pads on the feet of tables and chairs to mitigate damage. A rug could also help. Recoating a hardwood floor can also improve its lifetime - it's worth considering every decade or so.

Alternatively, a laminate floor gives you a wood effect, but is far more resistant to damage and can easily be cleaned if food or drink is spilled.
