Keeping safe when using ammonia to clean vinyl flooring

Vinyl flooring can - like any other floor covering - become covered with the stains that will inevitably build up over time, especially in areas of high use - such as the kitchen.

This will often lead to people going for the strongest possible product when cleaning the surface.

Ammonia is one of the products, and while ideally it should be avoided unless really necessary, it will leave the floor looking visibly cleaner.

With this in mind, here is a list of tips to take into consideration when using ammonia in cleaning a vinyl floor:

Give you home the appropriate level of ventilation -

As a strong and potentially dangerous chemical, ammonia can easily affect breathing - if adequate ventilation isn't provided. Therefore, before even contemplating using it, windows and doors should be open - as this will allow the vapor to exit the room.

Young children and elderly people should be kept away from the chemical whilst cleaning is undertaken, as should animals.

Creating a solution -

The ammonia isn't just applied neat to the vinyl flooring. Instead it has to be mixed down with washing-up liquid and water. To clean small stains, just one tablespoon of ammonia to two cups of water and one tablespoon of washing-up liquid are required.

Keep hand safe -

When applying the aforementioned solution by hand, it is always important to ensure that gloves are worn at all times. If breathing and eye irritation begin to occur, the cleaning process should be stopped - with a break for fresh air immediately sought.

Hands, gloves and any cloth used to apply the solution should always be thoroughly washed following cleaning.
