Is laminate flooring suitable for stairs?

Despite being an extremely popular choice of floor covering in the home, many homeowners are wary about using laminate on stairs. This wariness comes from the fact that laminate flooring can be extremely slippery underfoot - a feature that could potentially lead to accidents.

Although easy to install and relatively easy to keep in a good condition, many still have their doubts. Is installing laminate flooring on stairs worth the risk?

The answer to this question largely depends on the type of laminate you choose.

Many of the higher-quality laminates will have been given certification - giving you a clear indication of how safe they are.

Textured laminate is probably the best option for stairs. Also known as 'abrasive laminate', it has a much rougher surface that provides a greater amount of grip underfoot. This can help to limit the accidents that could potentially occur on a standard variety of laminate flooring.
