Is cork flooring fire resistant?

It has been well documented in recent times that cork is fantastic flooring material. Thanks to its wonderfully unique appearance, a texture that is soft underfoot and hypoallergenic properties, cork could potentially become one of the most popular flooring choices in the future.

Many will wonder though, is cork flooring fire resistant?

Well, another of cork's less talked about properties is that it is naturally fire resistant. Whilst woods may burn very easily, cork is a material that is considerably more difficult to ignite and thus, burn.

However, in the instance of cork flooring catching fire, as a material that doesn't undergo any extra processes during manufacturing, when it burns, it won't release harmful fumes or toxic chemicals into the air.

Some wood and laminate flooring, on the other hand, does undergo these extra processes - to, for example, strengthen the floor's wear layer - meaning they will often release these dangerous fumes - making a cork a much safer choice in the occurrence of a fire.
