In the past few years, cork has become a flooring material that has gained considerable popularity. Thanks to its stunningly unique finish and wonderful texture, cork is a great floor covering for the home.
Like other floor covering types, with cork flooring it is essential that there is a good level of underlayment laid down before installation.
With this in mind we've produced a short, simple guide on how you can go about installing cork floor underlayment:
Step 1 – It is crucial to take good preparatory steps. The most important step, in this case, is to ensure that your room is correctly measured. Measure both the length and width – subsequently multiplying the two together to get the square footage amount.
Step 2 – Having determined how much underlayment you actually need, the next step is to make the purchase. Rather than just going a buying any underlayment, it is important to talk to a flooring expert at your local DIY store – this will give you a better idea on what type of underlayment you will need. When buying, purchase a little extra that needed – this will provide spare cork for any future repairs that you may need to undertake.
Step 3 – Once purchased and back home, unwrap the underlayment, rolling it out across the length of the room – taping to the floor to keep it in place.
Step 4 – Manufactured in rows rather than one big pad, when the underlayment reaches a wall, it will need to be cut to size – to allow it to fit correctly. This can be done, simply by using a utility knife. Pressing down on the underlayment, run the knife down the length of the amount that you wish to cut away.
Step 5 – Repeat the previous step to install a new row – taping the new row down to the previously fitted row. Continue the process until the floor is completely covered.
