Install a subfloor to get the most from your vinyl flooring

Ensuring that the appearance of vinyl flooring doesn't suffer from the lumps and bumps of an uneven subfloor surface is important. Especially if you're to really get the best value for money.

Although it may seem like an unwanted, extra task, installing a level subfloor surface will make the overall installation process much easier.

With this in mind here is a simple guide on how to install a subfloor layer:

  • Any subfloor layer must be smooth – therefore remove any hardened adhesive, staples or nails. Also ensure that the surface is clean.
  • Taking the sheet underlayment, lay flat across the floor; underlayment with markings set out for staples will make the installation task somewhat easier.
  • There will be a number of areas marked to be cut out – remove these with a jigsaw.
  • Cutting a notch under the doorjamb, will allow for the underlayment to simply slot underneath - for a more professional finish.
  • Using a stapler, attach the underlayment to the floor.
  • Hammer down the staples – ensuring they are embedded in the underlay; staples sticking up could rip through the vinyl flooring, once laid.
  • Apply a skim coat to cover the underlayment seams.
  • Leave for around 15 minutes to dry before sanding to smooth any rough edges.
